WHAT IS HAPPENING?

In 13 countries with low and middle income, only 1 district hospital is available for 100 million population o average. Healthcare facilities and the existing services within are not able to work sufficiently due to some reasons such as medical machines to be outmoded or never provided. For instance, per 1 million people in Africa, there is only 0.31 computerized tomography (CT), 0.21 positron emission tomography (PET) and 0.42 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine.

WHAT DO WE DO?

Yeryüzü Doktorları supports the provision of mid and long-term, permanent health solutions by establishing or improving medical facilities such as hospitals, health centers, laboratories, blood banks, pharmacies, healthcare units. The supply of medical devices for correct diagnoses and treatments are provided apart from required trainings. Thus, it is ensured that both healthcare system in these countries is supported and the services in health centers are sustained. The use of local capacities is increased, costs are reduced, sustainability of healthcare services and employment of the local community are provided. Within the scope of equipment and system support projects, Yeryüzü Doktorları aims to provide preventive and therapeutical healthcare services, primarily in crises and emergencies, through equipment and system support projects in the regions/countries in need.

REHABILITATION AND MEDICAL EQUIPMENT SUPPORT FOR ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY IN UGANDA AND GOMBE REGIONAL HOSPITAL

Gombe Regional Hospital was established in 1969 to meet the healthcare needs of a basin where approximately 300,000 people reside. In the hospital, patients are often unable to be treated or face the risk of infection due to inadequate basic sanitary infrastructure, lack of current medical equipment or loss of functionality and sterilization problems.

Under the project conducted between December 2015 – 2016, 2 operating rooms, woman ward, child ward and the corridors in hospital were restored and medical equipment were supplied. To solve the water problem in hospital, 2 kilometer- drain pipe line was renewed and reusable water system was served.

 In 2017, equipment and system support was provided by Yeryüzü Doktorları in order to support the health services and to improve the equipment/system infrastructure of Uganda Islamic University and Gombe Regional Hospital.

SETUP AND OPERATING OF SOMALIA DR. OSMAN FIQI HOSPITAL

Drought, known as the Horn of Africa Crisis having occurred in July 2011, affected adversely Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya and lead to a serious food crisis. Yeryüzü Doktorları started working in Somalia actively since even only in Somalia 4 million people face with hunger, according to a report released by United Nations.

At the first phase, food aid and financial aid were provided to the region and during this period, in consequence of the need analyzes, it was determined that a comprehensive hospital was needed in Mogadishu. Shifa Hospital, which was opened on March 6, 2012, offered totally free health opportunities to more than 100 thousand people until the end of 2013. A total of 85 personnel worked for the hospital which had 66 inpatient beds. During this period, more than 2 thousand surgeries were performed and the Somalian hospital crew was trained by sending volunteer medical teams from various specialties the region on a regular basis.

The hospital assigned to the local partner in January 2014 has still been supported by volunteer medical teams and equipment support.

ESTABLISHMENT OF HEWA BORA HOSPITAL IN DR CONGO

Yeryüzü Doktorları helped build a hospital in one of the low-income districts, Hewa Bora, where is the home of 500 thousand out of the 2 million populated city of Lubumbashi in DR Congo.

The preparations for infrastructure, such as providing medical equipment, digging water wells to enable access to clean water, providing local medical teams with on-site training, were completed in 2014.

Hewa Bora Hospital was officially inaugurated in 2015. The volunteer medical teams were sent and a system was set across the hospital units. The technical trainings also continued to be held in addition to setting the hospital’s management hierarchy.

Being one of the biggest hospitals in the region, the hospital has 50 inpatient beds and provides healthcare services through its polyclinics in the fields of gynecology, pediatrics, orthopedics, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, dental health. It has two operating rooms, two intensive care units, an x-ray room, a pharmacy, a full-fledged laboratory, an emergency service and three VIP inpatient ward. The hospital continues to offer healthcare services to local community under the management of a local partner since 2016.

GAZA EQUIPMENT PROJECT

Within the scope of the project targeting recovering the shortages of health infrastructure occurred due to the ongoing attacks and embargoes on Gaza strip, where about 1.5 million Palestinians live in a 360-km2 area, it was aimed to increase the capacity of war and trauma surgeries and to establish health centers for eye-phaco surgery, orthopedic arthroscopic surgery and neurosurgical microsurgery in Gaza.

Required equipment was purchased from Turkey in the project, which was financed by TIKA and conducted in 2012. Yeryüzü Doktorları established the hospital below and trained relevant physicians about the use of these devices.

EQUIPMENT SUPPORT KOIDU PUBLIC HOSPITAL IN SIERRA LEONE

Yeryüzü Doktorları sent an observation team to Sierra Leonne and decided to increase the local capacity of Koidu State Hospital based on the delegation’s report. Surgery, anesthesia and laboratory equipment were provided to the hospital in this scope.

HEALTHCARE CENTERS IN SRI LANKA

After decades of conflict in Sri Lanka, more than 30,000 people were displaced and 700,000 more were killed. To cope with rapidly increasing demand for humanitarian assistance due to constant conflict and crises and problems of life safety, Yeryüzü Doktorları helped opening two health centers in Sri Lanka in 2007 to provide basic healthcare services and medicine.

SETUP OF OPHTHALMOLOGY UNIT IN SUDAN

In the West Darfur province of Sudan, which is near to Chad border, Yeryüzü Doktorları set an Ophthalmology Unit and helped providing healthcare services in El-Geneina City Hospital located in a region where more than 2.5 million people had been forced to leave their homes due to brutal circumstances.
