CATARACT DONATION

Cataract is a condition in which the eye’s lens loses its transparency and becomes cloudy. Normally clear, the lens turns opaque due to various reasons, preventing light from being properly focused on the retina. As a result, visual quality decreases, and images become blurry, hazy, or misty. Although cataracts are observed in many parts of the world, they are more common in regions with harsh climates, poor living conditions, and limited access to treatment.

CATARACT AROUND THE WORLD

According to the World Health Organization, 2.2 billion people worldwide experience vision loss or impairment. Preventable diseases such as glaucoma, trachoma, and cataract account for 1 billion of these cases, with 51% of blindness being caused by cataracts. Due to lack of access to treatment, millions of people lose their sight every year because of cataracts. Although it can be treated with a single surgery, cataract is especially common in African and Asian countries where living conditions are difficult. In these regions, cataract patients are unable to perform even their daily activities.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Since 2006, as Doctors Worldwide Turkey, we have been carrying out eye health programs in regions where they are most needed. To date, in 27 countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Chechnya, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Cameroon, Cambodia, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Mali, Mauritania, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Uganda, and Yemen, we have conducted over 280,000 eye examinations, performed more than 39,000 cataract surgeries, and provided glasses to over 73,000 people.
