WHAT IS HAPPENING IN SUDAN?

In the spring of 2023, the increasingly deepening economic collapse and political polarization left the people of Sudan in the midst of a humanitarian crisis intertwined with conflict, destruction, displacement, and hunger. According to United Nations data, 30.4 million people in Sudan are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. This figure shows that even the most basic needs—from food security and shelter to access to healthcare and protection—cannot be met for millions of people.

11.6 million people, forced to flee areas where clashes have intensified, have sought refuge in smaller settlements believed to be safer. However, as these areas attempt to host populations far beyond their capacity, water, food, and healthcare services are rapidly being depleted, and infrastructure has completely collapsed.

In many parts of the country, catastrophic levels of hunger (IPC Phase 5) have been officially confirmed. Hunger at this level means widespread acute malnutrition, high mortality rates, and the people of Sudan being pushed to the very limits of survival. This multi-layered humanitarian crisis in Sudan is forcing more people into a daily struggle for life with each passing day. While access to healthcare services has nearly come to a halt, the risks are even greater for children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic illnesses.

WHAT ARE WE DOING IN SUDAN?

As the humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to deepen, Yeryüzü Doktorları (Doctors Worldwide) has launched emergency relief efforts for those in need who have been affected by the conflict. Within this scope, food packages are being prepared and distributed to meet basic nutritional needs.

These food packages include essential staples such as millet flour, sugar, rice, cooking oil, and lentils, aiming to support families’ nutritional requirements. Based on regional needs assessments, plans are being implemented accordingly, and our efforts continue to strengthen access to basic necessities for communities affected by the crisis in Sudan.
