Eye diseases that can be treated with simple operations affect the quality of life of people as an important public problem especially in low income countries. For this reason, Yeryüzü Doktorları has been working on eye health since 2006.
What is happening?
Eye diseases which can be treated with small operations negatively affect the quality of life in a large extent, especially in the regions in need. There are 285 million people dealing with visual impairment, and 100 million of them are cataract patients. Since preventable and treatable eye diseases cannot be treated due to financial and technical difficulties, thousands of people lose their sight every year.
Cataract triggered by many reasons such as aging, diabetic, long-term sunlight, eye injuries, infection, can be treated only with surgery. Thousands of patients wait for a helping hand to reach them, especially in the regions with poverty, physical infrastructural inadequacies and lack of workforce capacity.
What do we do?
Since 2006, Yeryüzü Doktorları has set up eye healthcare camps in 15 countries across the world, such as Afghanistan, Chechenia, Cameroon, Kenya, DR Congo, Lebanon, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Yemen. In these camps, 106 thousand 74 eye examinations, 15 thousand 470 cataract surgeries have been conducted and 39 thousand 932 eyeglasses have been distributed so far.
In addition to these services provided, Yeryüzü Doktorları supports local health institutions through installing eye surgery units and training local health personnel, with the aim of increasing their local capacity.
What can you do?
Today, millions of cataract patients face with the risk of losing their sight if they are not treated. By your donations, you can be the reason for cataract patients to open their eyes.
