Retienal Diseases Treatment Program
Eye diseases that can be treated with simple operations affect the quality of life of people as an important public problem especially in low income countries. For this reason, Yeryüzü Doktorları has been working on eye health since 2006.
What is Happening?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 285 million people are estimated to be visually impaired worldwide. Even though 80% of visual impairments can be treated, thousands of people lose sight every year because they cannot reach medical treatment. In addition, an estimate of 39 million are blind. Cataract stands responsible for 51% of world blindness.
Cataract is triggered by factors considered easy to treat e.g. Bad living conditions, malnutrition, geographical and climatic conditions in addition to head and eye traumas. Due to economic and technical inadequacies, thousands of cataract patients are waiting for help.
What do We do?
Since 2006, Yeryüzü Doktorları has been setting up free eye camps in many countries across the world. Thanks to the efforts of its volunteer medical teams and donors, hundreds of examinations and surgeries are performed on annual basis. Heretofore, a total of 3,725 eye surgeries were performed in free camps located in Niger, Kenya, Lebanon, Somalia, Yemen, Mauritania, Tanzania, DR Congo, Sudan and Uganda. Along with eye surgeries, Yeryüzü Doktorları helps treating other eye diseases and dispenses eye glasses and medications free of charge.
In addition, Yeryüzü Doktorları supports local health institutions in aid-receiving countries through installing eye surgery units and training local health personnel, with the aim of increasing their local cap.
What can you do?
Today, 100 million cataract patients are desperately waiting for the inevitable end. Let’s help, let’s not leave anyone in the dark because of the cataract that can only be treated with an operation worth 500 TRY.
