What is Happening?

Hospitals, medical devices, and laboratory instruments are among the key needs for quality care of patients. However, one of the biggest shortages in underdeveloped countries is that there are no medical facilities in which health services are provided; and the physical capacities of those who are present are very inadequate. In 13 low and middle-income countries, an average of even 1 hospital do not fall for 1 million population.

What do We do?

Yeryüzü Doktorları supports the provision of mid-and long-term, permanent health solutions by establishing or improving medical facilities such as hospitals, health centres, laboratories, blood banks, pharmacies, health care units. With these projects, the utilization rate of local capacities is increased, costs are reduced, the continuity of health services provided in the region is supported and employment opportunities are provided for the people of the region.

Uganda Islamic University Gombe Regional Hospital Medical Equipment Support

Gombe Regional Hospital was established in 1969 to meet the health care needs of a basin where approximately 300,000 people reside. In the hospital, patients are often unable to be treated or face the risk of infection due to inadequate basic sanitary infrastructure, lack of current medical  equipment or loss of functionality and sterilization problems. In 2017, equipment and system support was provided by Yeryüzü Doktorları in order to support the health services and to improve the equipment/system infrastructure of Uganda Islamic University and Gombe Regional Hospital.

Somalia Dr. Osman Fiqi Hospital

As of beginning of the Horn of Africa Crisis in July 2011, Doctors Worldwide Turkey started working in Somalia actively. At the first phase, food aid and financial aid were provided to the region and during this period, in consequence of the need analyzes, it was determined that a comprehensive hospital is needed in Mogadishu. Shifa Hospital, which was opened on March 6, 2012, offered totally free health opportunities to more than 100 thousand people until the end of 2013. Shifa Hospital, on condition of free care of the patients who do not have sufficient money, was transferred to FIQI Foundation, which is a local partner, by means of supporting to its budget and its name was changed as Dr. Osman Fiqi Hospital. With its newborn care unit, ultrasonography devices and two modern operating rooms, the the hospital is at a position of a comprehensive hospital of Mogadishu. The hospital continued offering service in 2015 as well. Totally performed examination number, emergency case number, inpatient number, operation number, birth number and death number are 18,656, 3,365. 13,865, 684, 630, and 30 respectively.

Hewa Bora Hospital Establishment, DR Congo

Yeryüzü Doktorları helped build a hospital in the area of Hewa Bora in Lubumbashi city. Hewa Bora is the home of 500 thousand out of the 1.7 million populated city where some of the poorest families live with no electricity of water supplies.

The preparations for infrastructure, such as providing medical equipment, digging water wells to enable access to clean water, providing local medical teams with on-site training, were completed in 2014.

Hewa Bora Hospital was officially inaugurated in 2015. The volunteer medical teams were sent and a system was set across the hospital units. The technical trainings also continued to be held in addition to setting the hospital’s management hierarchy.

The hospital provides healthcare services through its polyclinics in the fields of gynecology, pediatrics, orthopedics, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, dental health. It has two operating rooms, two intensive care units, two x-ray rooms, a pharmacy, a full-fledged laboratory, an emergency service and three VIP inpatient ward. The hospital continues to offer healthcare services to local community under the management of a local partner.

Due to the ongoing attacks and embargoes on Gaza strip, where about 1.5 million Palestinians live in a 360-km2 area, also due to the lack of qualifications in the field of health and its branches, some cases could only be treated by doctors coming from abroad and some patients were expected to go abroad for treatment. Accordingly, DWWT donated the following surgical sets to Gaza hospitals in order to increase the surgical capacity in terms of war and trauma surgery, also to establish eye phaco surgery, orthopaedic arthroscopic surgery and neurosurgery microsurgery centers, nonexistent until then in Gaza.

TİKA funded the sets, which cost 184.000$, the equipment was purchased in Turkey and DWWT provided training to the doctors in the relevant hospitals on how to use the devices.

Gaza Equipment Project

Due to the ongoing attacks and embargoes on Gaza strip, where about 1.5 million Palestinians live in a 360-km2 area, also due to the lack of qualifications in the field of health and its branches, some cases could only be treated by doctors coming from abroad and some patients were expected to go abroad for treatment. Accordingly, DWWT donated the following surgical sets to Gaza hospitals in order to increase the surgical capacity in terms of war and trauma surgery, also to establish eye phaco surgery, orthopaedic arthroscopic surgery and neurosurgery microsurgery centers, nonexistent until then in Gaza.

Koidu Public Hospital Equipment Support, Sierra Leone

Yeryüzü Doktorları sent an observation mission to Sierra Leonne and decided to increase the local capacity of Koidu State Hospital based on the delegation’s report. Surgery, anesthesia and laboratory equipment were donated to the hospital.

Healthcare Centers, Sri Lanka

After decades of conflict in Sri Lanka, more than 30,000 people were displaced and 700,000 more were killed. To cope with rapidly increasing demand for humanitarian assistance, Yeryüzü Doktorları helped opening two health centers in Sri Lanka in 2007 to provide basic healthcare services and medicine.

Ophthalmology Unit Installment, Sudan

Yeryüzü Doktorları installed an Ophthalmology Unit and helps providing healthcare services in El-geneina City Hospital in Sudan’s western Darfur province, where more than 2.5 million people were forced to leave their homes due to brutal circumstances.
